Ingredients In Focus: Sweet Orange Essential Oil

Oranges are synonymous with Vitamin C. We eat, drink and cook with them and they are a winter staple to ward off nasty flus and colds. But as we head into spring in the southern hemisphere we wanted to highlight the many benefits of sweet orange essential oil for your skin!

Extracted from the cold pressed peels of oranges, this pregnancy safe essential oil has powerful antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties and is suitable for even the most sensitive of skin types. So, what else is it good for?

What are the benefits in skincare?

One of the main reasons sweet orange oil is included in skincare is for its high levels of Vitamin C, that help to protect and heal skin. It is also high in potent antioxidants which help to protect skin from UV and environmental damage. This is particularly important during pregnancy when hormones cause an increase in melanin production.

Ideal for sensitive or inflamed skin, we formulated our Calm it Baby  baby oil using sweet orange oil specifically to offer it's anti-inflammatory and protective benefits.

Who can benefit from using it?

Due to its natural antiseptic and antimicrobial properties and its ability to protect skin, sweet orange oil can benefit most skin types. It also contains Limonene, a powerful defender against oxidative stress helping to detoxify and remove harmful free radicals from skin.

Sweet orange oil has a natural sedative effect, helping to 'calm' and balance hormones and reduce stress. Research suggests that this natural essential oil can help help to reduce pulse rate and salivary cortisol.[1]

How else can you use it?

As an all-natural method for improving immune function and fighting various ailments, orange oil has been a popular remedy in folk medicine throughout the Mediterranean, India and China for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

During pregnancy, it can also be effective in reducing fluid retention and as such, can be used within a carrier oil to treat swelling and Edema.

This spring, we're turning to citrus, inside and out, for that change of season immunity boost we all need and to keep us glowing right through to the end of the year... and beyond!
